“…MWFL systems have been demonstrated using photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) [1], Sagnac loop mirrors (SLMs) [2] and high birefringence (Hi-Bi) fibers [3,4] as well as utilizing non-linear effects such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) [5][6][7]. Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) used as a reflector in a cascade configuration [8] or FBGs written on birefringence fibres [9] for compactness have also become popular choices for generating multiwavelength outputs. When the generated multiwavelength output is routed through a wavelength selective filtering mechanism such as the SLM [4], the SWFL can now easily switch between discrete wavelengths, thus reducing the need for tedious tuning procedures while at the same time providing a robust selectable wavelength laser source that can be deployed in the field.…”

“…A FLM of one-stage high birefringence (HiBi) fiber and polarization controller (PC) is a simple filter device, in which the filter spectrum depends on the PC and Hi-Bi fiber. However, the wavelength interval is only depends on the PMF [6]. The only way of varying the filter interval is to use different Hi-Bi fiber length in the FLM; it is not practical in real optical systems.…”

“…Furthermore, the homogenous broadening mechanism also leads to mode competition and subsequently fluctuating and unstable laser powers [1]. Overcoming this limitation required complex and expensive methods such as cooling the EDF with liquid nitrogen [2] or using specially designed twin-core EDFs [3], which is not practical in real world applications. As a result, other means of overcoming the limitations posed by the homogenous broadening mechanism in the EDF had to be found.…”
