Multivehicle Cooperative Driving Using Cooperative Perception: Design and Experimental Validation

Abstract: In this paper, we present a multivehicle cooperative driving system architecture using cooperative perception along with experimental validation. For this goal, we first propose a multimodal cooperative perception system that provides see-through, lifted-seat, satellite and all-around views to drivers. Using the extended range information from the system, we then realize cooperative driving by a see-through forward collision warning, overtaking/lane-changing assistance, and automated hidden obstacle avoidance.… Show more

“…Many companies, such as Autotalks, Commsignia, Cohda Wireless, and Denso, are already selling their V2V communication devices at affordable prices to the mass market. Other wireless communication technologies, such as 3G, 4G and WiFi, are also suggested in [293][294][295].…”

“…Since the vehicles are mobile and their locations are uncertain, their perception results may be "unaligned" or inconsistent. Map merging is proposed to align multiple local sensing maps so that the observations are consistent [294]. Nonetheless, transmitting a local sensing map uses substantial communication resources.…”

“…Cooperative perception is realized by exchanging sensor data between vehicles and Roadside Units (RSUs) and is necessary to widen or enhance the visibility area of HD maps [64], [65]. Sensors within a RSU mounted at a lamppost allow, due to the bird's eye view, a more accurate localization of objects.…”

“…One example is cooperative perception [65,136]. By sharing images (LIDAR or camera) with neighboring vehicles, image processing algorithms could be applied to create satellite images of the surrounding traffic.…”
