Multivariate Realised Kernels: Consistent Positive Semi-Definite Estimators of the Covariation of Equity Prices with Noise and Non-Synchronous Trading

Abstract: We propose a multivariate realised kernel to estimate the ex-post covariation of log-prices. We show this new consistent estimator is guaranteed to be positive semi-definite and is robust to measurement noise of certain types and can also handle non-synchronous trading. It is the first estimator which has these three properties which are all essential for empirical work in this area. We derive the large sample asymptotics of this estimator and assess its accuracy using a Monte Carlo study. We implement the est… Show more

“…Since the setting defined in this paper requires positive definiteness of the variance proxy, we restrict our analysis on the range of proxies that meet this requirement. Note that, other volatility proxies can be used instead, such as the multivariate realized kernels (see Barndorff-Nielsen, Hansen, Lunde, and Shephard, 2008aand Barndorff-Nielsen, Hansen, Lunde, and Shephard, 2008b, Hansen and Lunde, 2006b, Zhou, 1996 or the range based covariance estimators (Brandt and Diebold, 2006). …”

“…For instance, higher spreads deteriorate borrowing capabilities and market confidence which simultaneously impact on consumption and investment. The way to ameliorate the effects of the crisis on the real economy is a current political debate but the recipes 15 to be put in place still need to be fully understood.…”
