Multivariate Multi-Step Convection Nowcasting with Deep Neural Networks: The Novara Case Study

Abstract: Severe weather events are constantly increasing over northern Italy impacting the air traffic of one of the major airports of Europe: Milano Malpensa. Monitoring and predicting extreme convection is very challenging especially when it develops locally in a short time range. This work is performed within two projects funded by the H2020 SESAR Programme, with the objective of nowcasting with high accuracy the strong weather events affecting the airport. We collected different types of data from 10 locations arou… Show more

“…Many studies have been carried out with the aim of identifying regions that are most prone to weather-related hazards, and the scientific literature offers many arguments in this regard. In southern Europe, including Italy [8][9][10][11][17][18][19][20] and the Iberian Peninsula [21], the climate is strongly influenced by high insolation and proximity to the Mediterranean; therefore, some regions have among the highest hail frequencies in Europe [22]. Of course, another key issue is heavy rainfall, which shows significant frequency in terms of occurrence over Europe [23,24], with resulting floods.…”

“…To support the climatological findings, a shorter-term analysis on meteorological stations located in the area was also conducted. In Figure 3, the sum of the total number of extreme events [38], for the 3 year period 2016-2018, for each meteorological station, is given. The extremes are selected according to the 95th percentile of the rain events collected by the weather stations shown in Figure 3 in the period 2010-2020.…”
