Objectives: This study had two primary objectives: First, to examine the nature and co-occurrence of various forms of child maltreatment (sexual, physical. emotional, and witnessing violence) reported by Latina college students, and second, to explore coexisting maltreatment types and acculturation status as possible contributors to long-term adjustment diffi culties.Method: Participants were 112 Latina undergraduate students categorized by the number of childhood maltreatment types experienced (0, 1, or 2 or more) and acculturation level (1 to 5). The possible effects of co-occurring forms of maltreatment, in conjunction with acculturation status, were investigated with respect to participants' reported trauma symptomatology. Data were collected using self-report measures.Results: Nearly three out of 10 participants (29% ) experienced more than one type of child maltreatment and, as expected, these individuals reported greater trauma symptomatology than those reporting either a single type of maltreatment or no maltreatment at all. Those who reported multiple types also endured more severe maltreatment than did respondents who experienced a single type. Acculturation level was neither directly related to trauma symptoms nor did it moderate the lasting correlates of maltreatment among victims. Interestingly, those who experienced a single form of maltreatment reported no more trauma symptoms than did participants who reported no maltreatment history at all. Conclusion:This investigation documents a large degree of overlap among various forms of selfreported childhood maltreatment within a Latina college population. The results underscore the need to consider multiple forms of maltreatment, as well as severity, when making inferences regarding potential effects on later functioning.

Interpersonal difficulties, which are a central feature of borderline personality disorder, may be related to problems with social cognition. We explored facial emotion recognition in 44 women (15 with BPD, 15 healthy controls, and 14 with a history of childhood trauma but no BPD) examining the role that BPD and abuse history played in the ability to detect fearful, angry and happy cues in emotional faces. In Task 1, participants viewed pictures of morphed faces containing different percentages of specific emotions and reported the emotion they saw. In Task 2, participants were asked to increase the intensity of a specific emotion on an initially neutral face until they could detect that emotion in the face. Recognition of fear was not associated with abuse history or BPD. Recognizing happiness was also unrelated to BPD, although a history of childhood abuse predicted problems recognizing happiness, particularly in female faces. Across both tasks, the more women reported symptoms of BPD, the earlier they detected anger expressed in male faces. BPD symptoms also predicted the misidentification of anger in male (but not female) faces that contained no anger cues. Findings suggest that participants with BPD have an emotional processing bias toward seeing anger in males and that this is independent of abuse history.

Psychological family violence in childhood and adolescence is still poorly studied, due to difficulties in its definition and detection. This article aims to examine how psychological family violence reported by children and adolescents has been addressed in academic studies, using a literature review (LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, PubMed, CAPES Portal, PsycINFO, and SCOPUS databases) IntroduçãoA violência é uma questão fundamental para o setor de saúde devido ao seu impacto nas condições de vida e de saúde da população 1,2 , especialmente quando acontece durante a infância, antes do completo crescimento e desenvolvimento humano.Na década de 70 foi demonstrada ao mundo a gravidade dos abusos na infância através da "sín-drome da criança espancada", impulsionando estudos sobre violência física e violência sexual e seus impactos na saúde de crianças, adolescentes e adultos expostos a estes. Através destas experiências percebeu-se que a violência psicológica, muito pouco estudada na época, poderia causar mais danos do que as outras formas de maus-tratos, sendo certamente mais difícil de ser identificada 3,4,5,6,7,8 .Estudos das décadas de 70, 80 e 90 apontam para a grande preocupação com o conceituar e definir a violência psicológica.
