Multivariate Analysis to Assess the Quality of Irrigation Water in a Semi-Arid Region of North West of Algeria : Case of Ghrib Dam

Abstract: Dams are critical to agriculture, industry, and the needs of humans and wildlife. This study evaluates the water quality of the Ghrib dam in north west of Algeria, using Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI), sodium absorption rates (SAR) and multivariate statistical methods (Clustering and principal component analysis). The study concerns the analysis of physical and chemical parameters (pH, EC, O2, TUR, Ca, Mg, HCO3, Na, K, BOD, DCO, Cl−, PO4, SO3. NH4 et NO3) which were measured at twelve selected points al… Show more

“…Total hardness is expressed as the sum of multivalent cations (15) . The Ca +2 and Mg +2 dissolves naturally when the water moves through calcium and magnesium bearing minerals present within the ground (16) . Pre-monsoon and post-monsoon total hardness in the research area were determined to be 136 to 836 mg/l and 125 to 760 mg/l, respectively.…”

“…Electrical conductivity, which represents TDS in groundwater, is a strong indicator of salinity hazard to crops. The plant's inability to compete for water with ions in the soil solution is the main effect of high EC water on crop yield (16) . Plants will have less water available when EC is high, the values of EC vary from 674 µS/cm to 5114 µS/cm as shown in Table 1.…”
