Multivariate Analysis for the Classification Differentiation of Brazilian Sugarcane Spirits by Analysis of Organic and Inorganic Compounds

Abstract: Brazilian sugarcane spirits were analyzed to elucidate similarities and dissimilarities by principal component analysis. Nine aldehydes, six alcohols, and six metal cations were identified and quantified. Isobutanol (LD 202.9 mg L À1 ), butiraldehyde (0.08-0.5 mg L À1 ), ethanol (39-47% v=v), and copper (371-6068 mg L À1 ) showed marked similarities, but the concentration levels of n-butanol (1.6-7.3 mg L À1 ), sec-butanol (LD 89 mg L À1 ), formaldehyde (0.1-0.74 mg L À1 ), valeraldehyde (0.04-0.31 mg L À1 ), … Show more

“…Trace elements, such as Cu and Pb, can be derived from the materials of the utensils used for traditional distillation (so called artisanal), including Cu pot stills (alembics) and alquitaras, distillation coils, and maturation of distilled spirits (i.e., oak wood barrels and casks) [2,3,5,8,9,[14][15][16]19,[23][24][25][26][27][29][30][31][32][33]35,36,[40][41][42]. Surface corrosion of these materials is the most common cause of Cu and Pb , and other concomitant elements being present in finished products.…”

“…Accordingly, permissible levels of selected trace elements in these products are given as the following: 10 mg L -1 , 10 mg L -1 , 0.5 mg L -1 and 2 mg L -1 , respectively for As, Cu, Pb and Zn [25] in Serbia, 0.1 mg L -1 , 5 mg L -1 and 0.2 mg L -1 , respectively for As, Cu and Pb [1,3,[6][7][8]16,29,33,36] in Brazil, 10 mg L -1 , 1 mg L -1 and 10 mg L -1 , respectively for Cu, Pb and Zn, [2,5,14] in Spain, and 4 mg L -1 and 2 mg L -1 , respectively for Cu and Fe [13,27] in Venezuela. Apart from verification of the quality and the safety of distilled spirits, their reliable elemental analysis is important from a marketing point of view {i.e., to guarantee the products are genuine and of superior quality, particularly when these products are declared as possessing a certified brand of origin (CBO) label [1,2,6,7,31,37,38].…”
