Multitrait–Multimethod Analysis of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in Young Asian American Children

Abstract: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is a widely used psychopathology screening tool that measures children's emotional symptoms, peer problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, and prosocial behavior. Previous psychometric studies of the SDQ focused primarily on older children in Western cultures and suffered from several methodological limitations. This study examined the reliability, factor structure, convergent, and discriminant validity of the SDQ by focusing on young Asian Ameri… Show more

“…Taken together, for all items and scales, the method-specificity was larger than the consistency between students’ self-reports and teachers’ reports. As noted by Yu et al (2016), method effects tend to be strong for psychological measures, particularly for self-reports of well-being (Eid, 2018). In our study, the high correlations between the trait-specific method factors suggested generalizability of the method effects, meaning that teachers either over- or underestimated students’ emotional and social inclusion and their academic self-concept in a similar manner.…”

“…Measurement equivalence (i.e., metric invariance) of the variables was then tested by comparing the models assuming equal factor loadings across waves to the freely estimated models based on χ 2 difference tests. Regarding reliability of the measurement, we calculated ω coefficient, which is considered a better alternative to coefficient α (Revelle & Zinbarg, 2009; Yu, Sun, & Cheah, 2016). Finally, full structural equation modeling was conducted by estimating structural paths among parenting and child bullying constructs in a cross-lagged analysis.…”

“…All measures were available in the English and Chinese language and have been used with Chinese or Chinese American samples with acceptable psychometric properties (Nelson et al, 2006; Olsen et al, 2002: Wu et al, 2002; Yu et al, 2015; Yu, Sun, & Cheah, 2016).…”
