Multitemporal Monitoring of the Morphodynamics of a Mid-Mountain Stream Using UAS Photogrammetry

Abstract: This paper explores the potential of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) for the analysis of variations in the fluvial dynamics of a mid-mountain stream. The UAS photogrammetry was employed to acquire a multitemporal set of high-precision digital terrain models (DTMs) and orthoimages, thereby enabling the reconstruction of variations in riverbed and quantitative analysis of volumetric changes. A hexacopter UAS platform was used for the repeated acquisition of data for the photogrammetric analysis of a stretch of mi… Show more

“…The spatial data derived from the UAS imagery by the photogrammetric reconstruction represent a substantial qualitative leap in the resolution and accuracy of topographic information with a high potential for the detailed simulation of dynamic processes in the riverscape [6]. The level The comparison of different schematizations at the cross-sectional profiles indicate that the values calculated by the flexible mesh schematization were, at the most exposed sites, 20-35% lower than the results achieved using an orthogonal grid and were 15-30% lower than the values based on the curved grid.…”

“…The spatial data derived from the UAS imagery by the photogrammetric reconstruction represent a substantial qualitative leap in the resolution and accuracy of topographic information with a high potential for the detailed simulation of dynamic processes in the riverscape [6]. The level of detail, reaching typically 1-5 cm, enables the capturing of even the finest details of the stream channel or artificial structures that are the subject of research in hydrology and fluvial geomorphology [9].…”

“…It means that the camera decided what the correct exposure settings is. More information about aerial imaging with the unmanned aerial system can be found in Miřijovský and Langhammer (2015). We used ASD HandHeld 2 spectrometer for collecting the real electromagnetic spectra in a visible range.…”
