Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in an adolescent Nigerian girl with COVID-19: A call for vigilance in Africa

Abstract: Most reports of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) have come from Europe and North America. The paucity of reports in Africa is in contrast with the demographics of the series in New York, Paris and UK with children of African ancestry accounting for over 40%, of all cases of MIS-C. With the global trend of higher prevalence of MIS-C in children of African ancestry, enhanced surveillance and awareness for this syndrome in children with COVID-19 in Africa are therefore important. A case report of a 12-ye… Show more

“…Consequently, increased plasma levels of the terminal complement complex (sC5b9) suggest that complement activation and thrombotic microangiopathy are prevalent in COVID-19 and MIS-C patients ( 21 ). Although many of the described patients beside IVIG required an additional treatment with glucocorticoids, antibiotics, biological agents, and even plasmapheresis and renal replacement therapy, in many complete recovery was reported ( 10 , 17 , 22 , 23 , 28 , 29 ).…”

“…Multi-system in ammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) emerged in 2020 as a serious paediatric manifestation of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and has been described throughout the world [1][2][3][4]. MIS-C is reported in less resourced settings [5][6][7][8] but there are very few reports from Africa [9][10][11]. The incidence of a child developing MIS-C after exposure to SARS-CoV-2 is not well known as exposure rates to SARS-CoV-2 in children are largely unknown.…”

“…In April of 2020, MIS-C was first described in reports of children presenting with a severe multisystem hyperinflammatory illness temporally associated with preceding severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection or exposure 1,2 . Since that time, cases have been reported on six continents, and as of June 28, 2021 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 4196 confirmed US MIS-C cases with 37 deaths 3,4,5,6,7,8 .…”
