Attention is drawn to the role played by the size of the system in the thermodynamic analysis of particle yields in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SIS energies. This manifests itself in the non-linear dependence of K + and K − yields in AA collisions at 1 -2 A·GeV on the number of participants. It is shown that this dependence can be quantitatively well described in terms of a thermal model with a canonical strangeness conservation. The measured particle multiplicity ratios (πin central Au-Au and Ni-Ni collisions at 0.8 -2.0 A·GeV are also explained in the context of a thermal model with a common freeze-out temperature and chemical potential. Including the concept of collective flow a consistent picture of particle energy distributions is derived with the flow velocity being strongly impact-parameter dependent.

We present results on dielectron production in 40 Ar + KCl collisions at 1.76A GeV. For the first time ω mesons could be reconstructed in a heavy-ion reaction at a bombarding energy which is well below the production threshold in free nucleon-nucleon collisions. The ω multiplicity has been extracted and compared to the yields of other particles, in particular of the φ meson. At intermediate e + e − invariant masses, we find a strong enhancement of the pair yield over a reference spectrum from elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions, suggesting the onset of nontrivial effects of the nuclear medium. Transverse-mass spectra and angular distributions have been reconstructed in three invariant mass bins. In the former unexpectedly large slopes are found for high-mass pairs. The latter, in particular the helicity-angle distributions, are largely consistent with expectations for a pair cocktail dominated at intermediate masses by Dalitz decays.

Azimuthal distributions of η and π 0 mesons emitted at midrapidity in collisions of 1.9 AGeV 58 Ni+ 58 Ni and 2 AGeV 40 Ca+ nat Ca are studied as a function of the number of projectile-like spectator nucleons. The observed anisotropy corresponds to a negative elliptic flow signal for η mesons, indicating a preferred emission perpendicular to the reaction plane. In contrast, only small azimuthal anisotropies are observed for π 0 mesons. This may indicate that η mesons freeze out earlier from the fire ball than pions.
