Multistatic micro‐Doppler radar feature extraction for classification of unloaded/loaded micro‐drones

Abstract: This paper presents the use of micro-Doppler signatures collected by a multistatic radar to detect and discriminate between micro-drones hovering and flying while carrying different payloads, which may be an indication of unusual or potentially hostile activities. Different features have been extracted and tested, namely features related to the Radar Cross Section of the micro-drones, as well as the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and centroid of the micro-Doppler signatures. In particular, the added benefi… Show more

“… Features based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), in particular the mean and the standard deviation of the first three vectors of the left (U) and right matrix (V) resulting from the decomposition. These have been previously used for classification of unarmed vs potentially armed personnel and for micro-drones' payloads classification [17,19].…”

“…ISAR imaging of space targets with moving parts usually produces micro-Doppler phenomena, which reduce the image quality of ISAR and interfere with the resolution of the target [8,9]. In this paper, we introduce an ISAR imaging algorithm which can effectively remove the micro-Doppler effect.…”

“…When a target is illuminated by an electromagnetic wave, its fine motions produce micro‐Doppler signatures. Several researchers have investigated these signatures and their use in classification . Joint time‐frequency analyses have been applied to time‐domain Doppler signals to observe the time history of Doppler frequencies.…”
