Multistatic and MIMO Distributed ISAR for Enhanced Cross-Range Resolution of Rotating Targets

Abstract: In this paper, we present a new technique to exploit the data acquired simultaneously by multiple radar sensors carried by multiple air platforms to increase the cross-range resolution of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images of rotating targets. This distributed ISAR technique is devised for two different cases: 1) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) case with each platform carrying an active radar that transmits and receives RF waveforms and 2) multistatic case with a single platform carrying an a… Show more

“…where the derivative of the phase term on the right side of (19) in terms of t m is expressed in (16). Obviously, the time-frequency analysis can be utilized to transform the signal to time-frequency domain and then the HT can be used to detect the sinusoids on the joint time-frequency plane, which has been mentioned in [14].…”

“…Studies show that MIMO radar system has many advantages, such as excellent interference rejection capability, improved parameter identifiability, increased diversity of the target information [15]. Moreover, the crossrange resolution of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of target in MIMO radar can be increased if the platforms are properly located [19,20]. The ISAR imaging method in MIMO radar system is investigated in [21].…”

“…Ref. [11] study on the fusion imaging using the multi-aspect observation, which can shorten imaging time and improve the cross resolution. However, all the study uses the ideal scattering point model and ignore the differences of the bistatic scattering characteristics of target which makes the bistatic imaging results far from target recognition.…”

“…In order to address this problem, MIMO radar and ISAR technology is combined, which is known as MIMO-ISAR [4][5][6][7]. Reference [8] proposed to use a re-ranking spatial time method based on two-dimensional frequency estimation in MIMO ISAR.…”
