Abstract:Recent research has indicated the presence of heterochromatin-like regions of extended protein occupancy and transcriptional silencing of bacterial genomes. We utilized an integrative approach to track chromatin structure and transcription in E. coli K-12 across a wide range of nutrient conditions. In the process, we identified multiple loci which act similarly to facultative heterochromatin in eukaryotes, normally silenced but permitting expression of genes under specific conditions. We also found a strong en… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
