Multiscalar signal averaging in spark source mass spectrometry

Abstract: Multiple scans are conveniently accumulated using the multiscale mode of a multichannel analyzer. Isotopic abundances with average relative % errors on the order of 5% have been obtained to illustrate the improvement in precision that is possible with time averaging. Enhancement of sensitivity is also shown. Application to multielement analysis is demonstrated. No significant resolution loss is observed during the multiple scan averaging.

“…Among the serious intrinsic problems encountered in solids analysis by SSMS, obtaining less than satisfactory precision (25-35% RSD) in scan reproducibility is a leading one. In our laboratory, the addition of a rapid repetitive scanning unit for multichannel analyzer signal averaging was necessary to yield significantly better precision (10-15% RSD (32,33)) than obtainable comparing single scans.…”

“…Apparatus. The AEI MS-702 mass spectrometer, discharge gas train, and electrical detection readout, including modifications added in our laboratory, were previously described (5,11). In addition, a modular V/F converter (Teledyne Philbrick, Model 4705) has been added.…”
