Multiresistant serotype O 12Pseudomonas aeruginosa: evidence for a common strain in Europe

Abstract: SUMMARYA survey was made of serotype association and multiple antibiotic resistance in strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Europe. Of 208 epidemiologically distinct strains from 16 laboratories in 10 countries, 48 were resistant to carbenicillin (MIC > 128 ,ug/ml) and gentamicin (MIC > 4 ,ag/ml), and 12 of these strains were of serotype 0 12. Representative 0 12 strains from different countries were compared with two multiresistant 0 12 strains isolated 5 years apart. from a British burns unit and the antibio… Show more

“…The MDR AFLP35 strain belonged to serogroup O12. Epidemic strains are frequently of serotypes O11 and O12 (13,14,15,19,43,47,55). Detection of the simultaneous presence of three distinct P. aeruginosa O12 strains, one of which was an environmental strain from the BWC, by AFLP analysis illustrates the advantage of genotyping over serotyping.…”

“…These include Serratia marcescens (26) (55,121), for example, then neither a phenotypic nor a genotypic technique is likely to be useful and the investigation will have to rely on classical epidemiological studies. This is even more true when, among the various clones of a species, only one is virulent, e.g., H. influenzae biogroup aegyptus for Brazilian purpuric fever (70) or the E. coli strain responsible for hemolytic uremic syndrome (92).…”

“…Each distinct combination of patterns was used to define a ribotype. Altogether, 16 ribotypes were identified (A-P) ( epidemiologic analysis of P. aeruginosa [10,[21][22][23]. In this study, we have combined esterase electrophoretic typing and ribotyping.…”

“…E. coli rRNA. Indeed, Pitt and colleagues [10] have used these two methods concomitantly for characterization of multiresistant serotype 0 12 P. aeruginosa strains. All the studied P. aeruginosa isolates could be precisely and unambiguously characterized by esterase electrophoresis and RFLP of rDNA regions.…”
