Multiplicity structure of the hadronic final state in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA

Abstract: The multiplicity structure of the hadronic system X produced in deep-inelastic processes at HERA of the type ep → eXY , where Y is a hadronic system with mass M Y < 1.6 GeV and where the squared momentum transfer at the pY vertex, t, is limited to |t| < 1 GeV 2 , is studied as a function of the invariant mass M X of the system X. Results are presented on multiplicity distributions and multiplicity moments, rapidity spectra and forward-backward correlations in the centre-ofmass system of X. The data are compare… Show more

“…Particle multiplicity distributions have previously been measured in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA [12][13][14][15][16]. In this paper, charged particle multiplicity distributions in positron-proton (ep) DIS at √ s = 319 GeV are reported using high statistics data collected with the H1 detector.…”

“…Second, the H1 data are concentrated in the current fragmentation region (see also Refs. [6][7][8][9]), where the dominant partons are (sea) quarks and antiquarks -so the relevant structure functions are the quark and antiquark ones, see Fig. 2.…”

“…20 shows η-distributions for single diffraction in two mass bins with M X = 100 GeV and M X = 140, in pp collisions at W = 546 GeV. We see that a rapidity plateau with dN ch /dη ∼ 2.5 is developed for Figure 19: The average charged multiplicity as function of rapidity in bins of M X (left) [70], and average energy flow as function of pseudorapidity in bins of M X (right) [71]. The results correspond to W = 120 GeV and Q 2 = 24 GeV 2 .…”

“…Some results for the properties of the hadronic final state, obtained after final state radiation and hadronization, are presented in figs. 18 and 19, and compared with HERA data from H1 [70,71]. In all cases the results are obtained for W = 120 GeV and Q 2 = 24 GeV 2 .…”
