Multiplicity dependence of correlation functions in reactions at GeV

Abstract: Discussions about Bose-Einstein correlations between decay products of coproduced W-bosons again raise the question about the behaviour of correlations if several strings are produced. This is studied by the multiplicity dependence of correlation functions of particle pairs with like-sign and opposite-sign charge inpp reactions at √ s = 630 GeV.

“…This method, which was first proposed in [9] and described in details in [10], has been applied in the study of multi-particle dynamical fluctuations. In these investigations, also referred to as intermittency analyses, the dependence of the cumulants values on the average multiplicity has been proposed to be the consequence of a mixing of several well defined hadron emission sources [11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…Therefore, the area difference ∆A = |A 12 − A 21 | appears and enters into the weight while calculating the production probability. The weight, in terms of the area difference due to the interchange of the two bosons and after introduction of a transverse momentum k ⊥ term, then reads 22) where ∆ denotes the difference between the configurations P and P , and the sum of k 2 ⊥ j runs over all vertices. σ k ⊥ is the width of the transverse momentum distribution for the generated hadrons.…”

“…The correlation strength λ is expected [21,22] to decrease when the number of independent overlapping sources increases. The source radius R is expected to increase when the two sources are dependent, since color flux runs from one string over the gluon tip to the other string, so that the distance between two points on the two strings is along this longer curve rather than along a straight line.…”

“…Except for heavy ion collisions, where correlations beyond second order are found to be small, as can be understood from a superposition of independent particle-production sources [7], in all other types of reactions, significant positive higher-order correlations are seen. In two-or three-dimensional (typically rapidity, azimuthal angle, transverse momentum) phase space cells, they rapidly increase as the cell-size, ∆, becomes smaller.…”
