MULTIPLICATIVE ACTION OF A UV‐B PHOTORECEPTOR and PHYTOCHROME IN ANTHOCYANIN SYNTHESIS

Abstract: Abstract— Using 290‐nm light, which excites only a UV‐B photoreceptor, and 385‐ and 660‐nm light, which activate only phytochrome, the fluence rate‐response curves of monochromatic irradiations for anthocyanin synthesis in the first internodes of broom sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench, cv. Acme Broomcorn) were analyzed. Although the two photoreceptors absorbed light independently, they multiplicatively increased the action of each other. Accordingly, when the fluence rates of both wavelengths were changed toget… Show more

“…Synthesis of anthocyanin and flavone glycoside appears to be mediated by UV-B and phytochrome photoreceptors (Wellmann, 1974;Drumm-Herrel and Mohr, 1981;Duell-Pfaffand Wellmann, 1982). Although both types of photoreceptor sometimes act synergistically, they may also act independent of one another (Yatsuhashi and Hashimoto, 1985). Takahama et al (1989) found a stimulation of flavonoid synthesis in Vicia faba by applying H20 2 • This suggests that H20 2 is involved in the oxidation offlavonols.…”

“…In blue and near-UV light, flavins could sensitize the photooxidative reaction. Wavelengths of far-UV light that promote induction of anthocyanin synthesis, between 290 and 320 nm (120,125), are within the range where some metal-protein complexes, but not phytochrome, show absorption maxima (23,32,91). As expected, irradiation of plants with light of these wavelengths induces synthesis of enzymes in the pathway of anthocyanin synthesis without the involvement of phytochrome (14,49,120).…”
