Multiple Viral Infections and Genomic Divergence among Noroviruses during an Outbreak of Acute Gastroenteritis

Abstract: An epidemic outbreak of both norovirus (NV) and astrovirus (ASV) occurred on a research ship surveying Tokyo Bay, causing acute gastroenteritis in 26 of its 37 crew members. The presence of viral pathogens in fecal specimens was analyzed, and noroviruses were identified by reverse transcription-PCR in 18 (48.6%) of these specimens. In addition, astroviruses were identified in 14 (37.8%) of the fecal samples from the affected crew members, and multiple viral infections of both NV and ASV were observed in 6 case… Show more

“…Acute gastroenteritis in humans has been associated with a number of different viruses. Of these, rotaviruses (RV), noroviruses (NoV), sapoviruses (SaVs), human astroviruses (HAstVs), and enteric adenoviruses (EAds) are the most common causes of sporadic gastroenteritis requiring hospitalization, and together constitute a major burden for public health systems worldwide [Glass et al, 2000[Glass et al, , 2006Sasaki et al, 2006].…”

“…These environments include hospitals, day care centers, nursing homes, hotels, cruise ships, and schools [Borges et al, 2006;Bull et al, 2006;Sasaki et al, 2006]. Since the 1990s, the use of molecular methods has also highlighted the role of NoV as a common agent of sporadic, self-limiting episodes of acute gastroenteritis, which are normally caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water [Bull et al, 2006].…”

“…Both ordinary and real time PCR products were also sequenced in cases of very low Ct values or detection by only real time PCR. Sequencing was performed as previously described [12].…”

“…NoVs are now recognized as the leading cause of epidemic viral gastroenteritis, and the genogroups GI, GII, and occasionally GIV are associated with human infection (17,22,24). HAstV and EAds are also recognized as important viral agents of diarrhea in infants and the elderly (31). Although the association between HBoV2 and gastroenteritis is still unknown, the virus has been frequently found in fecal samples from children with gastroenteritis (3,8,18).…”
