Learning About Science in Preschool: Play-Based Activities to Support Children’s Understanding of Chemistry Concepts

The study explores children's emerging understanding of an important science concept in chemistry. Play-based learning activities were designed for children to experience and imagine the concept of 'small' as used in chemistry, moving from the visually experienced level of 'small' towards more imaginative understandings. Data were collected through visual ethnography. Analyses of six vignettes of conversations between children and the teacher illustrate development of children's understanding of the focus concept. Deconstruction of everyday items familiar to the children and visual computer animations provided experiences that enabled children to transition from a macro-level of understanding to visualise the molecular/ atomic level to differentiate between macro-and micro-understandings of 'small'. A process of 'sustained shared thinking' could describe the teaching/learning processes evident in the children's and teacher's conversations. The analyses suggest that sustained and shared conversations between children and teachers should stem from children's everyday experiences.

Paneudumme tässä artikkelissa keskustelunanalyyttiseen litterointiin. Aluksi erittelemme keskustelunanalyysin teoreettista näkökulmaa ja käsitteellisiä lähtökohtia sekä näiden yhteyttä tutkimusaineiston esittämiseen litteraattina. Tämän jälkeen keskitymme artikkelissa keskustelunanalyysin saralla suhteellisen tuoreeseen käytäntöön, vuorovaikutuksen multimodaaliseen litterointiin videoaineistojen pohjalta. Esittelemme yksityiskohtaisesti Lorenza Mondadan kehittämän merkintäjärjestelmän, jota sovelletaan jo varsin yleisesti vuorovaikutuksen multimodaalisuutta tarkastelevissa tutkimuksissa. Havainnollistamme litteroinnin käytänteitä ja niiden suhdetta vuorovaikutuksen analyysiin aineistokatkelman avulla. Samalla yhdistämme kaksi erillistä mutta toisiinsa monin tavoin kietoutuvaa näkökulmaa: miten litteraatin merkintöjä tuotetaan ja mitä analyyttisiä teemoja merkintöjen myötä nousee esiin.

“…One area that has received attention is the alignment with conversation analysis (CA), arguably a critical part of the analytical machinery of DP, and an essential part of DPs early and continued development. Recent advancements within CA and the related fields of interaction analysis and ethnomethodology include transcription systems that aim to capture multimodality (Mondada 2018), analyses that attend to gestures and embodiment (Keevallik 2018;Streeck, Goodwin, and LeBaron 2011) and calls for a fusion with experimental psychology (de Ruiter and Albert 2017). These areas of work have the potential to overhaul the way in which DP research collects and analyses data, including, for instance, nonlexical vocalizations (sounds, rather than words) and bodily movements.…”

This commentary provides a short reflection on the current status of discursive psychology in a fluctuating academic landscape. It focuses on three points: how discursive psychological research situates itself in relation to other research (both within and outside of psychology), how psychology itself can be respecified as a discipline (rather than only topic areas within psychology), and on the need for further development of methodological aspects and learning resources within discursive psychology. The piece concludes by noting the strengths of discursive psychology as a detailed analytical approach and of the benefits of talking to, and engaging with, other researchers.
