Multiple, solid evidence support that Austropotamobius italicus is not native to Spain

Abstract: 11recently published (Matallanas et al., 2016). Our work had concluded that the knowledge 12 generated by disparate scientific disciplines robustly converged to indicate that 13Austropotamobius italicus is non-native species in Spain, but Matallanas et al. (2016) 16First, we point out that the mono-disciplinary approach followed by Matallanas et al. (2016) is 17 much weaker than the transdisciplinary approach used and advocated by Clavero et al. (2016). 18Second, we believe that the genetic patterns presented… Show more

“…For example, using a geographical lexicon, Nores and López-Bao ( 2022 ) estimated that the current distribution of the Iberian wolf ( Canis lupus signatus ) still covers 70% of its 19th-century distribution. In contrast, Clavero et al ( 2022 ) used the same dataset but applied predictive modelling to compensate for gaps and biases in the data and arrived at a radically different result (30% of 19th-century distribution still intact). Corti and Díaz ( 2022 ) criticized Flueck et al ( 2022 ) for uncritically using historical sources thereby arriving at faulty conclusions regarding the former distribution, abundance, and habitat preferences of the huemul deer ( Hippocamelus bisulcus ) in Chile and Argentina.…”

“…Astacus astacus , Pontastacus leptodactylus or Procambarus zonangulu s). In addition, the European species Austropotamobius fulcisianus (previously referred to as A. italicus or A. pallipes ) is considered a cryptogenic species (sensu Carlton, 1996 ) in Spain, due to the still lack of consensus among the scientific community on its status (Clavero et al., 2016 ; Clavero & Centeno‐Cuadros, 2016 ; Martínez‐Ríos et al., 2023 ; Matallanas et al., 2016 ).…”
