Multiple Small Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors With Findings of Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract: Carcinoid tumors are one of the most common types of small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NETs). However, SI-NETs that manifest as subacute intestinal obstruction are extremely rare. The annual occurrence rate of jejuno-ileal NETs is 0.28-0.8 per 100,000 people. In this report, we describe a case of subacute intestinal obstruction due to a mid-ileal stricture. The patient underwent laparotomy after evaluation and investigation. Mid-ileal growth was noted, and small bowel resection was performed with prim… Show more

“…NET presenting with bowel obstruction usually result from a mechanical cause. 4,5 In the present case, despite convincing symptomatology and CT findings with intestinal dilation and a transition point, extensive workup including esophagogastroduodenoscopies, colonoscopy, MRE, push enteroscopy, and video capsule enterography failed to show obstructive pathology. No obstruction was noted on surgical exploration.…”

“…Neuroendocrine tumors of the GIT include carcinoid tumors, pheochromocytomas, and various location-dependent entities. Carcinoid tumors, for example, are the second most common primary small bowel malignancy and can be detected on MRE as avidly enhancing, well-delimited submucosal masses [15] . Lymphoma accounts for a significant portion of small bowel malignancies and GIT lymphomas, with MRE revealing a variable appearance that includes preservation of adjacent fat tissue and involvement of long or multiple segments.…”
