Multiple Selection Extrapolation for improved spatial error concealment

Abstract: This contribution introduces a novel signal extrapolation algorithm and its application to image error concealment. The signal extrapolation is carried out by iteratively generating a model of the signal suffering from distortion. Thereby, the model results from a weighted superposition of two-dimensional basis functions whereas in every iteration step a set of these is selected and the approximation residual is projected onto the subspace they span. The algorithm is an improvement to the Frequency Selective E… Show more

“…For a proper reconstruction, high-quality reconstruction algorithms such as the frequency selective reconstruction (FSR) [5] need to be used in combination with optimized quarter sampling patterns such as those in [6]. FSR has shown to be a successful reconstruction scheme for various inpainting and extrapolation tasks [7]- [9] and showed best results for non-regular sampling and quarter sampling in [1], [5], [6]. An advancement of quarter sampling is called three-quarter sampling [10].…”

“…In terms of the reconstruction algorithm we investigate linear interpolation and nearest neighbor interpolation, as well as two more sophisticated algorithms, namely, steering kernel regression (SKR) [5] and frequency selective reconstruction (FSR) [6]. FSR has shown to be a successful reconstruction scheme for various inpainting and extrapolation tasks [7,8,9] and showed best results for non-regular sampling and quarter sampling in [4,6].…”
