As the major nonpsychotropic constituent of Cannabis sativa, cannabidiol (CBD) is regarded as one of the most promising therapeutic agents due to its proven effectiveness in clinical trials for many human diseases. Due to the urgent need for more efficient pharmacological treatments for several chronic diseases, in this review, we discuss the potential beneficial effects of CBD for Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and neurological cancers. Due to its wide range of pharmacological activities (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties), CBD is considered a multimodal drug for the treatment of a range of neurodegenerative disorders, and various cancer types, including neoplasms of the neural system. The different mechanisms of action of CBD are here disclosed, together with recent progress in the use of this cannabis-derived constituent as a new therapeutic approach.

Chrisma Pretorius behaal haar voor-en nagraadse kwalifikasies, insluitend 'n PhD (Siel kunde) aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat. Sy is ook 'n geregistreerde Voorligtingsielkundige wat spesialiseer in psigometriese en neurosielkunde assesserings. Haar loopbaan as dosent begin in die Departement Sielkunde aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch in Maart 2010.Sy is ŉ jong opkomende navorser wat reeds verskeie innoverende studies van stapel gestuur en suksesvol voltooi het. Haar navorsingsfokus is op ŉ kombinasie van kliniese neurosielkunde en gesondheidsielkunde. Sy is veral geïnteresseerd in toestande soos Psigogeniese nieepileptiese aan valle (PNEA), Meervoudige Sklerose (MS), en Traumatiese Hoofbeserings. Sy is ook deel van ŉ internasionale navorsing taakspan wat tans besig is met ŉ studie oor PNEA. Die oorkoepelende fokus van haar navorsing is op die impak van kroniese siektetoestande vanuit verskillende perspektiewe (o.a. die pasiënt, die versorger en die diensverskaffers soos gesondheidsorgwerkers). Haar doelwit is om ŉ bydrae te maak tot die verbetering van dienste wat voorsien word aan pasiënte met kroniese siektetoestande om sodoende die ervarings van hierdie individue en hulle versorgers op ŉ positiewe manier te fasiliteer.

ObjectivesTo investigate the effects of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) on spasticity in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS).Literature surveyWe searched PubMed, SCOPUS, MEDLINE, REHABDATA, PEDro, CINAHL, AMED, and Web of Science until December 2022.MethodologyStudies were selected if they included PwMS, using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a main intervention, and the study was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) including at least one outcome measure evaluating spasticity. Two researchers individually screened the selected studies. The study's quality was assessed using the Cochrane Collaborations tool. The researchers decided that the meta‐analysis was not possible because the treatment interventions varied among the selected studies.SynthesisIn total, 147 studies were reviewed. Of them, nine studies met the eligibility criteria and included 193 PwMS (mean age = 43.25), 54.4% of whom were females. Eight studies considered "high" quality and one considered "moderate" quality. Seven studies that used rTMS demonstrated a significant decrease in spasticity in PwMS after the intervention. The remaining studies that provided tDCS did not show meaningful effects.ConclusionsThe evidence for the influences of rTMS on spasticity in PwMS is promising. The evidence for the impact of tDCS on spasticity in PwMS was limited. Further RCTs with long‐term follow‐ups are encouraged.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
