Multiple response optimization of alkaline pretreatment of sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) assisted by ultrasound

Abstract: A procedure for the alkaline pretreatment of sisal fiber assisted by ultrasound was optimized to obtain a higher solubilization of hemicellulose and the removal of lignin with cellulose fraction maintenance. A full factorial design 2 3 was used for the evaluation of the effects of the variables (sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude) on the pretreatment. The optimal values for the variables using the Doehlert matrix for the sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude w… Show more

“…This makes it a popular choice for applications in marine environments or areas prone to extreme weather conditions. The alkaline treatment involves soaking the fibers in an alkaline solution, typically sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) [17]. Here is a general guideline for the chemical treatment: Materials needed for the alkaline treatment of sisal fibers include sisal fibers, 10% NaOH solution for 24 hours -an alkaline solution (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), and protective equipment (gloves, goggles, etc.).…”

“…Interestingly, certain phenolics, such as quercetin glucuronide, rutin, and procyanidin B2 increased in the US-treated samples. In another study, pectin was recovered from sisal (Agave sisalana) waste and the yield values ranged from 14% to 30% depending on the ultrasonic power applied [97]. The best conditions were set at 61 W, 50 • C, and 26 min, and allowed the maximum recovery of pectin; beyond 65 W, the yield dropped off due to an excessive bubble formation in the solvent during cavitation, which diminished the efficiency of the US.…”

“…However, the modeling and simulation processes are useful tools for decision making, since they allow us to study the behavior of the process, as well as to evaluate and compare the impacts of operational conditions [22]. Also, it is essential to multivariate analysis, based on statistics, to determine which independent variables most affect the process, as well as to generate mathematical models to assess operational conditions [23]. In this work, multivariate statistical analysis was used to determine the energy self-sufficiency conditions of the ethanol autothermal reform.…”
