Multiple reflectors as narrow-band and broadband vacuum ultraviolet filters

Abstract: We report on the development of a new coating design for applications in the vacuum ultraviolet that yields significantly higher reflectivity over selectable bandwidths. We demonstrate that the concept can be used to fabricate high-performance narrow-band and broadband reflection filters, whose spectral properties can be greatly enhanced by utilizing several of these filters in tandem. For example, we have fabricated a narrow-band filter at the location of the 0 I 135.6-nm line with a 3.2-nm bandwidth, a peak … Show more

“…Compared to other UV-instruments where spectral selection is achieved with gratings [5][6], the challenge of the development of such instrument lies mainly on the performances of the coating deposition on the optical mirror surfaces. The -multilayer technology [7][8] seems to be the most promising technology to realize such challenge. -multilayer is defined as a periodic structure along the depth of the coating.…”

“…The final filters utilize a combination of three reflectors and one transmission filter in series. 5 The reflective component provides both filtering and superb long-wavelength rejection, whereas the transmission filter acts as a low-wavelength cut-on filter. An additional component of the overall filtering process is the use of a "solar blind" CsI photocathode.…”
