Multiple Reactivations of the Rennick Graben Fault System (Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica): New Evidence From Paleostress Analysis

Abstract: The dense fault network that separates the tectonic units of northern Victoria Land to the E from the East Antarctic Craton to the W represents a regionally sized, NNW‐SSE trending deformation zone that is also known as the Rennick Graben Fault system (RGF). This long‐lived deformation zone is characterized by great structural complexity, with the superposition and polyphasic reactivation of regional faults; it is known to have been active since the Cambrian‐Ordovician, when it formed as a suture zone between … Show more

“…In particular, this different, independent dataset provides similar results that strongly support a polyphase tectonic evolution of the CF. Similar tectonic reactivations along inherited weakness zones are a deeply investigated deformation process that operates both on Earth (e.g., [75][76][77]) and on other planetary surfaces (e.g., [13,27,32]).…”

“…Each analysis consisted of a polymodal Gaussian fit of the azimuthal frequency of the lineaments falling within each circular area. Polymodal analysis was performed using the methodology presented in previous studies [5,89,90]. The results include the statistical approximation for each independently and normally distributed system responsible for the found azimuthal distribution, which includes their azimuth mean, mode, and standard deviation (sd).…”
