Multiple-period planning of Internet Protocol-over-Elastic Optical Networks

Abstract: In view of both the growing dynamic traffic and increasing costs, in future, network operators will have to adopt a multi-period network planning technique that aims to jointly account for the upgrade of both the network, and the optical and the IP edges. In the current work, for an IP-over-Elastic Optical Network, we propose a multilayer network planning technique that is multi-period in nature, i.e. the approach relies on efficient forecasts for a short-term increase in the volume. We formulate the problem a… Show more

“…The ever-growing diverse traffic and its related bandwidth requests have rendered the optical networks (OTNs) limited by capacity (Agrell et al, 2016). With the introduction of elastic optical networks (EONs), the needs for large capacity and heterogeneous granularity in traffic of the next-generation OTNs can be satisfied (Iyer & Singh, 2019). However, owing to its use of only two multiplexing dimensions, (Winzer, 2012) has envisioned that the EONs will also result in a crunch of the fibre capacity.…”

“…[Soumplis et al 2017] apresentou um algoritmo para fazer o planejamento de redes em condições de tráfego incremental e mostrou até 36% de melhoras em gastos. [Iyer and Singh 2018] propôs formulações de ILP para minimizar o custo de operação em redes multicamadas, considerando tráfego incremental. Esses trabalhos mostram resultados promissores para o estudo de redes elásticas em regime multiperíodo.…”

“…Determining spectrum allocation regulations might influence future increases in internet traffic and pricing. As a result, network operators have a difficult task since they must employ multi-period network planning approaches in order to improve the quality of service in the operator's network [17]. For example, the use of first-last-fit (LF) spectrum allocation in Elastic Optical Networks (EON) can lower the blocking probability [18].…”
