Multiple microvenular hemangioma: A case report

Abstract: The current study reports a case of multiple microvenular hemangioma (MH). A 35-year-old male presented with dark red maculopapules on the trunk and limbs that had been apparent for 5 years. The number of lesions exceeded 100 in total. A histological examination demonstrated multiple, irregular, branching venules in the dermis, without any endothelial atypia. On immunohistochemical analysis of the vascular structures, the endothelial cells stained positive for CD31, CD34 and factor VIII, and the perivascular c… Show more

“…15,18 One patient with multiple lesions was treated with interferon gel twice daily for 1 month with no improvement. 19 The pathogenesis of microvenular hemangioma has not been rigorously studied and is unclear. No reported cases to date document a history of antecedent trauma to the site and most report a denial of such trauma.…”

“…All three cases were in females; two of the patients were pregnant and one had recently changed her oral contraceptives. Two years later, Hunt et al reported 10 cases that shared the same histopathologic findings and termed them “MVHs.” To the best of our knowledge, at present, 64 cases have been reported . Table summarizes the clinical characteristics of MVH.…”

“…The use of immunohistochemistry now provides us with better approaches for this rare vascular tumor. To the best of our knowledge, only 64 cases have been reported, with 60 cases in the English literature . However, the etiology and origin of MVH remain uncertain .…”

“…MH was first described by Hunt and colleagues in 1991 (1), although Bantel et al (2) had reported a similar entity designated "micropapillary angioma" in 1989. MH typically presents as a slowly enlarging, red, purple or reddish-blue plaque or nodule of less than 30 mm diameter on the trunk or limbs of young to middle-aged adults (3,4). The lesion is mostly solitary and asymptomatic.…”
