Multiple Microgrids: A Review of Architectures and Operation and Control Strategies

Abstract: Several issues of individual microgrids (MGs) such as voltage and frequency fluctuations mainly due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources’ (RESs) power production can be mitigated by interconnecting multiple MGs and forming a multi-microgrid (MMG) system. MMG systems improve the reliability and resiliency of power systems, increase RESs’ utilization, and provide cost-efficient power to the consumers. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the conducted studies in the MMG area summarizin… Show more

“…In addition, if the main control and communication system can accommodate more MGs, expanding and attaching them to the design above is quite simple. However, this architecture fails to ensure the reliability of the network or the main grid since there is only one feeder from the grid with the MGs, which will be stressed or overloaded on some occasions [32,34,35]. Increasing the overall system's reliability and shared power for the architecture above can be achieved by connecting each MG directly to its neighbors, forming a daisy-chain topology, which can also be called parallel MGs on a single feeder, as shown in Figure 3b.…”

“…Advanced energy management controls leverage predictive algorithms that forecast energy generation, consumption patterns, and storage needs based on historical data, weather predictions, and load profiles [29]. This enables proactive decision-making and enhances the ability of micro-grid to adapt to changing conditions [30].…”
