Multiple hormone analysis indicates involvement of jasmonate signalling in the early defence of potato to potato virus YNTN

Abstract: The involvement of plant hormones in the very early response of plants to virus infection was studied in potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.) infected with potato virus Y NTN (PVY NTN ). Endogenous plant hormones and compounds mediating a stress response (JA -jasmonic acid, OPDA -12-oxo phytodienoic acid, SA -salicylic acid, IAA -indole-3-acetic acid, ABA -abscisic acid) were simultaneously quantified in susceptible cv. Désirée and resistant cv. Santé, one and three hours after inoculation. Of the hormones ana… Show more

“…SA and JA are well known to play an important role in regulating the defense responses against pathogens (Alvarez 2000;Kova et al 2009;Singh et al 2004) and a fast-growing number of studies are demonstrating that ABA is also implicated in the stress-response signaling network (Asselbergh et al 2008b). Moreover, JA and, more recently, ABA have been shown to be prominent in the establishment and maintenance of the mycorrhizal symbiosis (Gutjahr and Paszkowski 2009;Hause et al 2002Hause et al , 2007Herrera-Medina et al 2007;Isayenkov et al 2005).…”

“…JA is usually associated with defense against necrotrophic pathogens and does not have a systemic role in defense against viruses although, recently, it was observed to have a limited effect in early local defenses (Kova et al 2009). It is widely accepted that JA is involved in the process of mycorrhiza formation in roots, as demonstrated in several host-fungus interactions (Hause et al 2007) as well as specifically in tomato (Herrera-Medina et al 2008).…”

“…Among them, the jasmonate response, dependent on the SCF COI1 complex, plays a crucial role in pathogen defenses. Not much information about the role of jasmonates on viral infection is currently available, but recent works revealed jasmonate signaling as an emerging topic in plant-virus interaction research (Vigliocco et al, 2002;Liu et al, 2004;Agudelo-Romero et al, 2008;Ascencio-Ibá ñ ez et al, 2008;Yang et al, 2008;Kovac et al, 2009).…”

“…Little information is available about the role of oxylipins in virus-infected plants. Several lines of evidence suggest that oxylipins play an important role in the development of HR and disease resistance (28,29). Moreover, the application of MeJA on plants was effective in inhibiting the replication of several viruses, including PVY, in compatible pathosystems (30,31,32).…”
