Multiple eruptive periungual pyogenic granulomas during anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody therapy for rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Background: New targeted therapies have been developed for inflammatory and neoplastic diseases.Main observation: We report on a 73-year-old woman who developed multiple eruptive periungual and subungual pyogenic granulomas. Because of severe rheumatoid arthritis the patient was treated with monoclonal anti-CD20 antibodies. Eruptive granuloma pyogenicum developed after the second antibody application and remained more than 8 weeks after targeted therapy was over. New lesions, however, did not appear. Conclusion… Show more

“…The periods of puberty and menopause have been noticed to start similar growths as well. Among inducing drugs of the granulomas are cyclosporine, [23][24][25] erythropoietin, 26,27 anti-CD 20 monoclonal antibody therapy, 28 Clinically, the PG is a smooth or lobulated mass that is usually pedunculated, although some lesions are sessile. 2 The incidence of lobular capillary hemangioma of PG, which occurs more frequently in sessile form, is approximately 66% whereas non-lobular capillary hemangioma of pyogenic granuloma occurs in pedunculated form 77%.…”

“…Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is considered a hyperproliferative vascular response to a variety of stimuli . The first report of PG was made by Poncet and Dor in 1897, and later, Warner and Wilson‐Jones in 1968 reported a series of patients who developed a localized cluster of PGs around the site of an original PG after its surgical removal (localized eruptive PG) …”
