In many geological settings, strong reflections at the air-water interface contribute to most of the multiple energy in the recorded seismograms. Here, we describe a method for free-surface multiple attenuation using a reflection operator model of a seismic record, derived using the well-known invariant embedding technique. We implement this method in the 2-D plane-wave domain, where lateral variation of the geological structure of the earth is taken into account by the coupling of different ray parameters. In situations where the lateral variations are smooth, the data are well compressed in the 2-D plane-wave domain and the resultant bandlimited matrices significantly reduce the computation cost. One important feature of the proposed method is its flexibility, which allows for the removal of multiples from selected reflections.To generate multiple free data, wave-theory-based multiple attenuation methods attempt to estimate either the source function or the subsurface reflectivity. Our method takes advantage of both approaches, such that we initially predict multiple traveltime using the reflectivity approach and then seek a source function to predict the amplitudes. Synthetic and real data examples show that this method is stable and successful in attenuating the surface multiples.

A fast, modified parabolic Radon transform

We propose a fast and efficient frequency-domain implementation of a modified parabolic Radon transform ͑modi-fied PRT͒ based on a singular value decomposition ͑SVD͒ with applications to multiple removal. The problem is transformed into a complex linear system involving a single operator after merging the curvature-frequency parameters into a new variable. A complex SVD is applied to this operator and the forward transform is computed by means of a complex back-substitution that is frequency independent. The new transform offers a wider curvature range at signal frequencies than the other PRT implementations, allowing the mapping in the transform domain of low-frequency events with important residual moveouts ͑long period multiples͒. The method is capable of resolving multiple energy from primaries when they interfere in a small time interval, a situation where most frequency-domain methods fail to discriminate the different wave types. Additionally, the method resists better to amplitude variations with offset ͑AVO͒ effects in the data than does the iteratively reweighted least-squares ͑IRLS͒ method.The proposed method was successfully applied to a deepwater seismic line in the Gulf of Mexico to attenuate waterbottom multiples and subsequent peg-legs originating from multiple paths in the water column. Combining the suggested method with the surface-related multiple elimination ͑SRME͒ has led to the best attenuation results in removing residual multiple energy in the stack.

A B S T R A C TWith the pyramid transform, 2D dip spectra can be characterized by 1D predictionerror filters (pefs) and 3D dip spectra by 2D pefs. These filters, contrary to pefs estimated in the frequency-space domain (ω, x), are frequency independent. Therefore, one pef can be used to interpolate all frequencies. Similarly, one pef can be computed from all frequencies, thus yielding robust estimation of the filter in the presence of noise. This transform takes data from the frequency-space domain (ω, x) to data in a frequency-velocity domain (ω, u = ω · x) using a simple mapping procedure that leaves locations in the pyramid domain empty. Missing data in (ω, x)-space create even more empty bins in (ω, u)-space. We propose a multi-stage least-squares approach where both unknown pefs and missing data are estimated. This approach is tested on synthetic and field data examples where aliasing and irregular spacing are present.
