Multiple coherence resonance induced by time-periodic coupling in stochastic Hodgkin–Huxley neuronal networks

Abstract: In this paper, we study the effect of time-periodic coupling strength (TPCS) on the spiking coherence of Newman-Watts small-world networks of stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) neurons and investigate the relations between the coupling strength and channel noise when coherence resonance (CR) occurs. It is found that, when the amplitude of TPCS is varied, the spiking induced by channel noise can exhibit CR and coherence bi-resonance (CBR), and the CR moves to a smaller patch area (bigger channel noise) when the amp… Show more

“…This type of the resonance enhanced response is also reported in single neuron [63] and complex networks of neurons [19,62]. We obtain the multiple CR phenomenon depending on the frequency of TPCS as in [47] for the optimal channel noise intensity. We also examine the effects of the amplitude of TPCS on the coherence of the network and arrive at two facts: the first one is that temporal coherence exhibits a resonance-like dependence on cell size regardless of the value of ε 0 , and the maximal coherence is obtained for the same cell size, corresponding to optimal intensity of channel noise.…”

“…Excitable systems in general proved to be very susceptible to a multitude of noise-induced phenomena, as reviewed comprehensively in [30]. Adding spatial degrees of freedom, along with the possibilities for introducing other sources of heterogeneity, lead to the discovery of very interesting and quite exotic phenomena, such as the ghost resonance [31], and double as well as multiple stochastic [32][33][34][35] and coherence [36][37][38][39] resonances.…”

“…Thus, its effects on the neuronal dynamics have been investigated in detail. In particular, the emergence of multiple CR (MCR) phenomenon induced by information transmission delay and time periodic coupling strength in the presence of channel noise is reported in various theoretical works 22 23 24 . For instance, Gong et al .…”
