Multiple‐Choice versus Open‐Ended Questions in Advanced Clinical Neuroanatomy: Using a National Neuroanatomy Assessment to Investigate Variability in Performance Using Different Question Types

Abstract: Methods of assessment in anatomy vary across medical schools in the United Kingdom (UK) and beyond; common methods include written, spotter, and oral assessment. However, there is limited research evaluating these methods in regards to student performance and perception. The National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition (NUNC) is held annually for medical students throughout the UK. Prior to 2017, the competition asked open‐ended questions (OEQ) in the anatomy spotter examination, and in subsequent years als… Show more

“…Rigidity and bradykinesia are clinical manifestations of the thalamocortical-spinal route suppressed by GPi and SNr. 2) Simultaneously, the unobstructed path is regulated by DA’s excitatory impact-bearing striatal receptors, and the lack of this neurotransmitter lessens the striatum’s ability to inhibit GPi and SNr ( Merzougui et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Likewise, to measure the anatomy core knowledge and applied clinical knowledge, multiple types of assessment questions should be used to cater for a different levels of cognitive competence, as highlighted in the Bloom Taxonomy (7). For instance, Multiple True False (MTF) questions can be used to assess anatomy core knowledge, while, single-best answer questions, open-ended questions, extended matching questions, and modified essay questions can be used to assess the clinical application of anatomy knowledge (52,53).…”

“…Merzougui and colleagues investigate the impact of different question types and format on student perception versus student performance (Merzougui et al, 2021), while the effect of contextual information and images on student performance and the way in which students perceive clinically oriented questions, in particular, is also described (Sagoo et al, 2021). Adaptation of the traditional identification-based "spot-test" assessment to include a multiple-choice format is introduced and shown to be a suitably reliable and challenging alternative to a free-response question approach (Douglas-Morris et al, 2021).…”
