Multiple cardiac lipomas and pericardial lipomatosis: Multidedector-row computer tomography findings

Abstract: Being rare tumors of the heart, cardiac lipomas are usually discovered incidentally during non-cardiac-related examinations of the chest. Although they are reported to be typically solitary, multiplicity has been described in tuberosclerosis patients. Here we reported the multidedector-row computer tomography (MDCT) findings of a nontuberosclerosis case with multiple cardiac lipomas along with pericardial lipomatosis, who presented with symptoms of left heart failure after a hysterectomy surgery but otherwise … Show more

“…Invasive cardiac lipoma is usually found by chance on echocardiography because of the absence of obvious symptoms. Our search of Web of Science, Medline, and PubMed databases as of September 12, 2019 yielded 58 reports of patients with invasive cardiac lipoma detected by echocardiography 1‐3,6,13‐66 . We summarize the information provided by echocardiography combined with the results of CT and MRI (Table 1).…”

“…Complimentary to this finding, the patient also had diffuse pericardial lipomatosis, which is also an extremely rare finding with only a few cases reported in adult patients (6, 7). Pericardial lipomatosis, whether isolated or accompanied by other diseases, has not been reported in the pediatric population.…”

“…Multiple cardiac lipomas in patient without tuberous sclerosis are extremely rare (4). In our case, all of the fatty lesions in both ventricles were located on the endocardial surface of the interventricular septum or were intermingled with trabeculae or moderator band.…”

“…Cardiac CT examination was per- (1). It can originate in the myocardium including subendocardium, subepicardium, or intramyocardium and can be seen in the pericardial space or any cardiac chamber at any age without particular sex predilection (4,6). This tumor is usually solitary, and the commonly reported sites are the right atrium, LV, and the interatrial septum; however, multiple lipomas have been described in patients with tuberous sclerosis (6).…”
