Multiple C–H Activations of Linear Alkanes by Various (η5-Cyclopentadienyl)W(NO)(CH2CMe3)2 Complexes

Abstract: As illustrated in the accompanying diagram, thermolysis of Cp*W(NO)(CH 2 CMe 3 ) 2 (Cp* = η 5 -C 5 Me 5 ) at 80 °C in neat linear alkanes effects three successive C−H bond activations of the hydrocarbon substrates and forms Cp*W-(NO)(H)(η 3 -allyl) complexes in which the allyl ligands are derived from the alkanes. These allyl hydrido compounds exist in solutions as mixtures of isomers containing monosubstituted (i.e., terminal) or 1,3-disubstituted (i.e., internal) allyl ligands which can have either an endo o… Show more

“…Previously, the {WTp(NO)(PMe 3 )} system has been observed to be inserted into N–H, O–H, C–H, and C–F bonds, but to our knowledge, this is the first example we have encountered involving an sp 3 carbon. We note, however, that the seminal work by the Legzdins group includes many such examples for the {WCp*(NO)} system. , …”

“…We note, however, that the seminal work by the Legzdins group includes many such examples for the {WCp*(NO)} system. 43,44 A previous work with the WTp(NO)(PMe 3 )(η 2 -trifluorotoluene) complex demonstrated that even though η 2 -arene complexes with electron-deficient benzenes exhibit poor coordination diastereoselectivity, protonation of the isomeric mixture at −30 °C followed by treatment with a nucleophile such as a cyanide ion (NaCN) results in the formation of a single diastereomer of an η 2 -diene complex. 24 Disappointingly, when the methyl phenyl sulfone complex 2 was protonated (HOTf/CH 3 CN) and then treated with NaCN at −30 °C, two products (18a and 18b; Table 1 and Scheme 4) were formed in roughly a 1:2 ratio.…”
