Intracranial Salmonella Infections: Meningitis, Subdural Collections and Brain Abscess

“…In a 100-year review of focal Salmonella intracranial infections, Rodriguez et al [5]in 1986 highlighted the rarity of this condition and added one case. Only about 80 cases of focal intracranial infections have been reported [1], which includes our 6 cases. Among these are 22 brain abscesses, 40 subdural empyemas and another 18 cases with combinations of two or more pathologies, mostly as case reports [1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19].…”

“…Surprisingly, however, focal intracranial pathology affecting the brain secondary to typhoid fever or salmonella infection is extremely rare, and only less than 80 cases have been reported in the world literature, including our cases [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Until the year 2000, only 35 cases of subdural empyema had been reported [1]. In the present study, we report a series of 5 cases of subdural empyemas (positive subdural pus cultures) and 1 case of subdural effusion (positive blood cultures and Widal test but negative subdural pus cultures).…”
