EdD, RN, CNS, reply-ACEs are potentially traumatic events, such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness or addiction, and other forms of household dysfunction, that occur during childhood. 1 They are associated with chronic health problems and poor health outcomes later in life. 1 ACEs have been linked to several diseases that may be exacerbated by toxic stress that causes prolonged sympathetic nervous system activation. 2,3 In the US, one in every six adults reported experiencing four or more ACEs. 1 Additionally, of the 10 leading causes of death, 5 are associated with ACEs, including heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes, and suicide. 1 Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness, which can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, death. 4 Asthma affects 8.3% of Americans and ranks as the most common chronic disease in the pediatric population. 5 Asthma accounts for 1.3 million ED visits and 3,500 deaths each year, and an estimated annual fiscal cost of $56 billion. 5 Although the exact cause of asthma is unknown, possible causative factors include interactions between genetic factors and environmental allergens. 6 Asthma usually starts during childhood before the age of 5 and is more common in children than adults. 5,6 Recent studies are evaluating the link between chronic stress and respiratory disorders such as asthma.
