Multipion Bose-Einstein correlations inpp,p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Abstract: Three-and four-pion Bose-Einstein correlations are presented in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We compare our measured four-pion correlations to the expectation derived from two-and three-pion measurements. Such a comparison provides a method to search for coherent pion emission. We also present mixed-charge correlations in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of several analysis procedures such as Coulomb corrections. Same-charge four-pion correlations in pp and p-Pb appear consistent with the e… Show more

“…Both of these uncertainties make it practically impossible to determine the presence of coherent emission from two-pion correlations alone. However, both uncertainties were found to largely cancel in the comparison of measured to built multipion BE correlations [1,2].…”

“…An interesting insight into the problem of QCD ground state can be offered by the low-p ⊥ (<200 MeV) spectra of pions measured at the LHC, which show up to ∼30%-50% enhancement compared to the hydrodynamic models (see Refs. [87][88][89]). A possible interpretation could be found in the framework of a hypothesis about hadronization and freeze-out processes in chemical non-equilibrium [90].…”

“…The existing estimates for the typical density of the pion fireball are contradictory [26,43] yielding values varying in a broad range, from n ∼ 0.8 n 0 to 2.5 n 0 for LHC en-ergies. Recently, experimentalists in the ALICE Collaboration observed a significant suppression of threeand four-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at √ s N N = 2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) [44,45]. This may indicate that there is a considerable degree of coherent pion emission in relativistic heavy-ion collisions [46,47].…”
