Multiphoton Coherent Manipulation in Large-Spin Qubits

Abstract: Large-spin Mn2+ ions (S=5/2) diluted in a nonmagnetic MgO matrix of high crystalline symmetry are used to realize a six-level system that can be operated by means of multiphoton coherent Rabi oscillations. This spin system has a very small anisotropy which can be tuned in situ to reversibly transform the system between harmonic and nonharmonic level configurations. Decoherence effects are strongly suppressed as a result of the quasi-isotropic electron interaction with the crystal field and with the 55Mn nuclea… Show more

“…We experimentally demonstrated the possibility to perform up to 100 simple one-qubit operations on various X-band EPR transitions of the lowest electronic 8 7 2 S multiplet (this figure can be potentially increased to ~ 10 3 using the off-resonance and the rotation angle error correction schemes). In comparison with the previously studied spin-5/2 systems [16][17][18], the present system offers somewhat larger …”

“…Typical implementations of these qubits are molecule-based magnets [3][4][5][6] , nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond 7 and quantum spins in crystals [8][9][10][11] . These spin-based qubits are designed such that the spins are well separated in the crystal, leading to an increased decoherence time due to weak spin dipolar interactions.…”

“…Other important experimental parameters are the sample temperature and external field orientation (parameter p). In the current work, the temperature was set at 50 K which provides a long enough Rabi coherence time (∼ 1µs), while keeping the relaxation time sufficiently short to ensure a fast acquisition time 6,12 . Thus, the waiting time between the pump and probe pulses was set at 3 µs, larger than the decoherence time, but shorter than the relaxation time.…”

“…Fundamental and technological advances can be achieved by strongly coupling spins with photons in a cavity [8][9][10] , leading to a new type of hybrid quantum memory 11 . Recently, we proposed a tunable multi-level system as a potential candidate for multiqubit implementation 6,12 which could be used to implement Grover's algorithm [13][14][15] for instance. We describe in this work a two-tone experiment using the S = 5/2 spin of Mn 2+ ions diluted in MgO.…”
