Multiobjective Optimization of Concrete Frames by Simulated Annealing

Abstract: This article aims to describe a methodology to design RC building frames based on a multiobjective simulated annealing (MOSA) algorithm applied to four objective functions, namely, the economic cost, the constructability, the environmental impact, and the overall safety of RC framed structures. The evaluation of solutions follows the Spanish Code for structural concrete. The methodology was applied to a symmetrical building frame with two bays and four floors. This example has 77 design variables. Pareto resul… Show more

“…En este ámbito, es importante destacar el trabajo desarrollado por Payá-Zaforteza et al (10) en el que se minimizan las emisiones de CO 2 en la construcción de pórticos de edificación mediante la técnica de la cristalización simulada. Los resultados son comparados con diseños de coste óptimo observándose que ambos objetivos están relacionados y que las soluciones más comprometidas con el medio ambiente suponen un pequeño sobrecoste.…”

“…The single objective simulated annealing was developed by Kirkpatrick et al (1983). It is considered as the basis of the multi-objective optimization (Paya et al 2008). The single objective optimization gives an optimum set of design variables with respect to single objective, while the same variables give an unacceptable design for other objectives.…”

“…Then, Paya et al [17] optimized RC building frames applying four objective functions: the economic cost, the constructability, the environmental impact, and the overall safety. Additionally, Martinez-Martin et al [18] designed RC bridge piers minimizing the economic cost, the reinforcing steel congestion and the embedded CO 2 emissions.…”
