“…They state that it is necessary to gain a better understanding of MNE misbehaviors to counter criticisms when they are unwarranted, and to provide guidance to managers on how to prevent misbehavior when the critics are correct. We add that it also necessary to understand when some MNEs are well-behaved, even if in unprecedented, anomalous, or transitory ways, for the same reasons as Cuervo-Cazurra et al (2021), but also because these good behaviors give rise to unanswered questions and carry important lessons and implications which we discuss further hereunder.…”

“…We begin to address this lacuna with the discussions that we presented in this perspective article. Recently Cuervo‐Cazurra, Dieleman, Hirsch, Rodrigues, and Zyglidopoulos ( 2021 ) conducted a literature review on the different aspects of MNE misbehaviors. They state that it is necessary to gain a better understanding of MNE misbehaviors to counter criticisms when they are unwarranted, and to provide guidance to managers on how to prevent misbehavior when the critics are correct.…”

“…Over the period of observation, we recorded 238 firm-year human rights abuse events, of which 52% are against workers, 45% against communities, and only 3% against consumers. Although it would have been interesting to investigate the causes of each kind of abuse separately, we note that since human rights abuses are relatively 'rare' events (Cuervo-Cazurra et al, 2021), pooling the abuses in one dependent variable allows us enough freedom to run robust econometric analyses, which would not be possible otherwise. Hence our study observes the general human rights conduct of firms at a more macroscopic level.…”

“…However, by engaging with the work of business ethicists and leveraging IB’s understanding of MNEs’ operations and contexts to inform ethical decisions, IB scholars can help MNEs in this endeavour. Moreover, a clear normative foundation will also help mitigate MNE misbehaviour (Cuervo-Cazurra et al , 2021) that hinders the realisation of the SDGs.…”

“…So far, IB research on the “dark side” of IB is limited. A recent literature review on MNEs’ “misbehaviour” (Cuervo-Cazurra et al , 2021) found that social and environmental misbehaviour has received very little attention, with only the governance issue of corruption more widely studied. Interestingly, the majority of the studies focus on the external environment of MNEs rather than internal factors for explaining misbehaviour.…”
