Multinational Expansion of Worker Cooperatives and Their Employment Practices: Markets, Institutions, and Politics in Mondragon

“…As is fairly well known, the huge Spanish worker cooperative Mondragón has at times struggled with labor unrest (Kasmir, ; Whyte & Whyte, ). In particular, Mondragón has struggled with the fact that, “cooperativist expansion entails a contradiction with core cooperative values” (Flecha & Ngai, ), a problem exacerbated by the attempts to internationalize the cooperatives (Bretos, Errasti, & Marcuello, ) . Kennelly and Odekon conclude from their case studies of three successful worker co‐ops that while there are certainly significant benefits for workers and communities, “with successful economic performance and attendant growth come significant challenges to worker participation and governance.” In particular, as a kind of echo of some of the issues Mondragón has encountered, Kennelly and Odekon detail how the U.S.‐based company Equal Exchange has found itself departing from democratic practices as it grows and takes on subsidiaries as complements to its core business (Kennelly & Odekon, ).…”

“…During a long recession from the mid‐1970s to 1984, when 100,000 people in the Basque region lost their jobs and the unemployment rate hovered around 20%, “ not a single Mondragón member lost his or her job” (Malleson, ). In the early years of the Great Recession, Mondragón was, for the most part, a bastion of stability in a sea of economic turmoil (Tremlett, ), even adding employment during an extremely difficult period for the Spanish economy (Bretos et al, ; Flecha & Ngai, ). And, even as Fagor Electrodomésticos was failing, the company took steps to soften the blow, even for nonmember workers outside the Basque country (Bretos et al, ).…”

Además, tienden a adoptar fórmulas y técnicas avanzadas de comunicación horizontal y participación de os miembros en la toma de decisiones (Bretos, Errasti y Marcuello 2018, 2019.…”
