“…Reducing the amount of ethanol produced a red shift in the observed spectrum due to the higher RI of pure G87 Gasoline. Marfu’Ah et al proposed an alternative configuration of MMI based on splicing a short length of singlemode fibre between two multimode fibres as a multimode–singlemode–multimode (MSM) structure where part of the energy of the core mode is transferred to cladding modes [ 74 ]. Experiments were performed using the MSM sensor with and without a novolac resin coating.…”

“…Additional attractive features of POFs i.e., ruggedness, flexibility, ease of fabrication, low cost, and ability to be operated in the visible range, have sparked considerable interest among researchers, making them an attractive choice for developing optical fibre ethanol sensors for industrial applications. The ethanol concentration measurement has been proposed using a variety of POF sensors , for example, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and SiO2 coated tapered sensor 4 , an unclad sensor coated with carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene oxide (GO) 5 , an uncoated U-bend sensor 6 , a U-bent sensor based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) 7 and a D-shaped sensor based on surface plasmon resonance 8 Heterocore structured designs for refractive index sensing using GOFs have also attracted significant attention [9][10][11] however, the use of POFs for heterocore structured sensors remains a novel and unique concept. In this work, a side-polished balloon shape heterocore structured POF ethanol sensor using fibres of two different core diameters is investigated.…”
