Multimode Nonlinear Fiber Optics: Massively Parallel Numerical Solver, Tutorial, and Outlook

Abstract: Building on the scientific understanding and technological infrastructure of single-mode fibers, multimode fibers are being explored as a means of adding new degrees of freedom to optical technologies such as telecommunications, fiber lasers, imaging, and measurement. Here, starting from a baseline of single-mode nonlinear fiber optics, we introduce the growing topic of multimode nonlinear fiber optics. We demonstrate a new numerical solution method for the system of equations that describes nonlinear multimod… Show more

“…Spatiotemporal nonlinear multimode fiber optics is a more recent development [187][188][189][190][191][192][193][194][195][196][197][198][199][200][201][202][203][204]. These studies employ graded-index (GRIN) fibers, which feature smaller modal dispersion than step-index fibers.…”

“…ULTIMODE FIBERS (MMFs) have acquired significant popularity in areas such as telecommunications [1], [2], microscopic imaging [3], optical manipulation [4], [5], fiber lasers and amplifiers [6], [7]. Moreover, MMFs provide new degrees of freedom and opportunities in linear and the nonlinear optics, which are not possible to realize with singlemode fibers (SMFs) [8]- [10]. Most of the research relating to single-core step-index MMFs [3], [4], no-core fibers (NCFs) [5], graded-index fibers [2], [10] and multicore fibers [1] has focused on studies of the core modes, which propagate mainly in the core region.…”

“…Nonlinear optical behavior between these cladding modes provides a different perspective to study four-wave mixing and soliton dynamics because there are a large number of optical modes spatially overlapping one another. The equations of motion governing such a system become intrinsically more complex [17,18] than those of their single-mode counterparts. Because of their large size yet relatively strong confinement, the dispersion characteristics of cladding modes are very nearly optimal for SC generation when pumped at 1060 nm.…”
