Multimode-interference-structure optical-fiber temperature sensor with high sensitivity

Abstract: Abstract:We have developed a very simple high-sensitivity fiber temperature sensor using multimode interference. The fabricated multimode interference structure comprises a large-core multimode fiber (MMF) sandwiched between single-mode fibers. Silicone rubber is coated onto the MMF as a cladding material. This silicone rubber coating exhibits a large refractive-index change with temperature that produces a very fine temperature resolution as low as 1 × 10 À2 ℃.

“…A SMS fiber structure used in combination with a uniform Bragg grating [9] and an enhanced evanescent field fiber sensor based on a tapered MMF sandwiched between two SMFs [10] have also been reported for refractive index measurement. Regarding the use of a coreless silica fiber as sensing device, some works have also been reported for the measurement of refractive index [11] and temperature [12], however the measurements were usually based on a transmission scheme [13], [14].…”

“…Whereas in second method the polymers used to produce various component for different applications (Enemuo et al 2018;Qian et al 2011;Wang et al 2013). The most suitable method for the recycling optical fiber is mechanical method.in general, optical fibers present different advantageous like light weight, electromagnetic fields immunity, having chemical stability, allow multiplexing manuscript and being compact (Fukano et al 2013;Du et al 2017;Wang et al 2015;Azmand et al 2021). Hence these benefits enable fibers in different performance such as sensors.…”

“…We have demonstrated the high temperature sensitivity of an MMI sensor even with a solid cladding material instead of a liquid. 16) In this study, we clarify the mechanism underlying the high temperature sensitivity of the MMI sensor with a solid cladding material and describe a method of designing the parameters of a solid cladding material to obtain high sensitivity. The relationship between the wavelength shift of the MMI signal and the temperature in an MMI structure, where the MMF was coated with temperature-sensitive solid materials, is investigated.…”
