Multimodality imaging using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging and18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography in local prostate cancer

Abstract: AIMTo assess the relationship using multimodality imaging between intermediary citrate/choline metabolism as seen on proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H-MRSI) and glycolysis as observed on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG-PET/CT) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients.METHODSThe study included 22 patients with local PCa who were referred for endorectal magnetic resonance imaging/1H-MRSI (April 2002 to July 2007) and 18F-FDG-PET/CT and then underwent pr… Show more

“…A recent article suggested a sequence of metabolic rearrangements in the progression of prostate cancer, with changes in intermediary metabolism preceding changes in glycolysis. 8 Intermediary metabolism tracers, Carbon11 ( 11 C)-or 18 F-choline and 11 C-acetate are involved in cell membrane synthesis. Choline is used to synthesize phosphatidylcholine, a cell membrane component, while acetate is used in fatty acid synthesis.…”
