Multimodality Approach in Detection and Characterization of Hepatic Metastases

Abstract: Early detection of liver metastases is important in patients with known primary malignancies. This plays an important role in treatment planning and impacts on further management of certain primary malignancies.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography-computed tomography scans are reported to have high accuracy in the diagnosis of intrahepatic lesions. MRI in particular has the advantages of its high tissue sensitivity and its multiparametric approach.Hepatic… Show more

“…Treatment options for CRLM include surgery, chemotherapy, chemo/radioembolization, and percutaneous techniques like microwave and radiofrequency ablation [ 7 ]. Surgical resection is feasible in about 20% of cases, but a multidisciplinary approach involving oncologists, surgeons, and specialists is crucial for tailoring optimal treatment plans [ 8 ].…”

“…Goals of imaging should be an early and accurate detection and diagnosis of metastases to the liver for better patient management and outcomes. The article by Patil et al 1 highlights the state-of-the-art multimodality approach in detecting the characteristics of hepatic metastases. Imaging play an important role not only in diagnosis but also in presurgical planning by accurate segmental localization of the disease for resection as well as volumetric evaluation of the lobes of liver to determine resectability.…”
